Ballito is home to the first female-owned Castrol accredited service centre in Africa

The first female-owned Castrol accredited auto service centre in Africa has opened its doors in Ballito.
Operated by Ballito’s Mel Manson, Castrol Auto Service Ballito opened for business on Tuesday with a promise to not only stand up for the right to repair movement, but also for women.
A local for the past 14 years, Manson is passionate about the right to repair movement.
The Competition Commission implemented new guidelines which allow motorists to shop around and use non-original quality spare parts.
Legislation took effect in 2021 which allows car owners with maintenance plans and warranties to repair their cars at service providers of their choice.
Manson hails from a background in the automotive industry spanning more than 20 years, with a particular skill set gained from her time working in dealership service centres, which she referred to as the ‘old boys club’.
Speaking at the opening of the service centre in Garlicke Drive, she said their opening was very much also a crusade for women.
“You will be able to come here and feel confident about having your car serviced,” she said, highlighting that they will accurately explain what your car needs in simple terms.
With a presence in more than 140 countries, Castrol is a prominent player in lubricant technology, catering to a diverse range of clients in the automotive, marine, industrial, aerospace and energy production sectors.
Speaking at the launch, Castrol Sales Director Melanie van Straaten said the opening was not only an achievement, but one which indicated the brand’s commitment to developing local economy while supporting diversity and inclusivity.
“We’re proud to be contributing to the growing movement towards gender transformation in the industry and creating opportunities for women to succeed,” she said.
