The quest to find KwaZulu-Natal’s most remarkable young farmer is underway once again.

Entries have opened for the highly anticipated 2023 KZN Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year competition.

The competition is open to all Kwanalu members under the age of 40, regardless of gender, farming specialisation, or the scale of their operations.

“We seek individuals who can find novel ways, both big and small, to improve their communities, safeguard the environment, ensure food security, and contribute to the economy,” said Kwanalu CEO Sandy La Marque.

The KZN winner will represent the province at the prestigious 2023 Toyota SA/Agri SA Young Farmer of the Year Awards.

This prestigious competition pays homage to the exceptional efforts of young farmers in the province, recognising their distinct contributions in various fields such as production, marketing, staff management, organised agriculture, community involvement, and innovative agricultural practices.

“Farmers are the unsung heroes who sustain our nation, promote good health, and generate employment. It is vital that we acknowledge the invaluable dedication and adaptability demonstrated by our province’s young farmers, while simultaneously inspiring others in the process,” said La Marque.

Last year North Coast farmer Tammy Williams claimed the coveted title, having captivated the judges with her determination to learn the ins and outs of farming, implementing environmentally conscious practices and driving community upliftment.

With no prior experience in farming, Williams began her journey as a receptionist at Windemere Farm near King Shaka International Airport 12 years ago.

Showing a keen interest and a willingness to learn, she was promoted to manage a section of the banana farm’s operations, and was later handed the responsibility of heading production and management of several banana farms spanning 120 hectares.

In 2013, she expanded into macadamia production, and since then the farm’s macadamia operations have grown to cover 150 hectares.

Entries close on July 30. For more information and to submit entries, visit www.kwanalu.co.za or call 033 342 9393.
