Netcare Alberlito Hospital steps up with new cutting-edge electronic medical record system

The system is set to revolutionise patient care and empower medical teams with real-time access to comprehensive healthcare information.

Netcare Alberlito has introduced a pioneering electronic medical record system, allowing its medical teams immediate and remote access to patients’ medical information in real time.

The Netcare medical group is the first in the country to adopt the system, with few hospitals across the globe having access to it at this stage.

Hospital staff quickly embraced the system which provides unprecedented advantages for enhanced patient healthcare.

Netcare Alberlito Hospital general manager, Sizwe Khoza, said all documentation and management of patient records are managed electronically.

Medical tests to and results from pathology laboratories, radiology services and the blood bank are now done electronically, with information feeding directly into the mobile platform.

In addition, the hospital also boasts digital integration of medical equipment and devices in ICUs and theatres.

“It has already become a game changer in our hospital, automatically recording patients’ clinically relevant data on their unique electronic medical record.

“Through this secure platform, treating specialists, nurses and other healthcare practitioners involved in a patient’s care can access and check each of their patients’ current condition and medical notes on a mobile device at any time and from any location,” he said.

Having access to the most comprehensive and up-to-date information at their fingertips at all times has important benefits, informing clinical decision-making in real time.

It further contributes to patient safety through a fully integrated pharmacy module, a first of its kind in South Africa, which builds on the pioneering e-scripting process implemented by Netcare and ratified by the South African Pharmacy Council in 2020.

The system also checks for potentially harmful interactions between prescribed medications and allergies, also providing pharmacists access to a patient’s complete medication record.

There are strict parameters in place for information security and patient confidentiality.

“This is the future of healthcare, harnessing the latest advances in digital technology to enable the availability of quality data at all times, and using it to improve and save lives,” Khoza concluded.

The system has been adopted by 30 Netcare facilities across the country, with plans to have it rolled out to all Netcare facilities by April next year.
