Bikers rally on scooters to raise funds for flood-damaged Umdloti

A group of bikers with serious intent to make their presence felt invaded Umdloti on Saturday.
But the group of 22 two-wheelers descending on the Doloras Coffee Shop gathering point were not your typical leather-clad Hell’s Angel-type easy riders with steely looks in the eye.
They didn’t thunder in on Harleys and such, but rather glided in demurely on scooters.
Their mission? A fundraising run to generate funds for outstanding reconstruction and restoration work in the flood-damaged town.
One of the organisers, Mariska Marais, said scooter brigade raised R2 000 in support of the cause.
She said the collective efforts of private individuals have already made a huge difference.
“Streets are now adorned with new lights, freshly painted signs are up, potholes have been filled, sewerage pipes near the ski boat building are being repaired and overgrown bushes trimmed”.
Though the rebuilding process is gradual, the community is determined to soon restore their beloved town to its former glory.
Saturday’s scooter rally was the second after Jade Wilson and Jason Hewitt launched the concept in January, with a third run planned for August.
