Multi-truck collision at Zinkwazi claims two, N2 closed

Reports from the scene indicate that a smaller truck was initially rear-ended, after which two larger trucks collided head-on.

Two people died and five were injured after three trucks collided on the N2 at the Zinkwazi-Darnall bridge this morning.

Both lanes on the N2 are currently closed as emergency teams clear the scene, with traffic diverted to the respective on- and offramps.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick, said the two people who died were seated on the trailer of one of the trucks. Their age and gender are yet to be confirmed.

The initial collision involved a truck rear-ending a smaller truck.

“The smaller truck went down an embankment, while the second truck veered into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a third truck,” Meyrick said.

A driver of one of the larger trucks had to be taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, while the driver and passengers of the remaining truck reportedly sustained critical injuries and were trapped inside the wreckage.

Firefighters responding to the scene worked to extricate the entrapped people while acts of looting unfolded, Meyrick said.

Once extricated, the injured were taken to various hospitals for further care, while the driver was airlifted.
