Ballito’s Townsend Park play area spruced up

Plans remain in the pipeline to eventually erect fencing around the playground to protect children from roaming dogs that have reportedly chased them off in the past.

The Townsend Park children’s play area received a much-needed revamp recently.

Supported by Ballito Lions, Siza Water and KwaDukuza-based business Ola Lifestyle, ward 30 councillor Jack Abrahams, with the help of Melissa Felt, Walter Schotter, Connor Tabori-Clark and ward 6 councillor Tammy Colley, gave the playground a much-needed facelift.

The play area was introduced to the park by the Samuelson family just before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The elements have eroded the facilities over time, however, and the cherished retreat for children became rusty and unsafe.

“We are extremely thankful for the support received from businesses and the community in restoring the play area,” said Abrahams.

Ballito Lions donated R5 000 and an Astro mat, while Siza Water came on board with supplies worth just over R4 200.

The Samuelson family donated a further R4 000 to the cause, with the merry-go-round replaced by Ola Lifestyle.

Taking to the newly revamped slide were Oliver and Joshua de Charmoy, with Brody Pieterse on the slide.

Owner of Ballito Moves and Townsend Road resident, Mathew Godfrey and his family, also donated toward the refurbishment. Godfrey told Abrahams the park held a special place in his heart, owing to him growing up in the area and remembering playing cricket in the park as a child.

The Godfrey family also called on Abrahams to look at the feasibility of refurbishing the park’s tennis courts, something Abrahams will seek approval for from the KwaDukuza Municipality.
