Empowering boys to become responsible men

The programme not only focused on instilling a sense of responsibility among the boys but also provided them with a safe platform to voice the challenges they encounter as today's youth.

The Inkunzi Isematholeni programme to empower young boys with knowledge and wisdom to become responsible men, was launched at Ntshawini’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli Secondary School on Sunday.

The primary objective of this initiative is to combat gender-based violence, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and overall crime rates.

iLembe Men for Change chairperson and spokesperson for the Glendale police station, warrant officer Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo addresses the boys.

While the objectives are similar, this programme is not the same as that of the Inkunzi Isematholeni Foundation.

Ndwedwe resident Sbusiso Shandu joined forces with the iLembe Men for Change cluster to establish this transformative programme, which serves as a support structure for the South African Police Service (Saps) and Community Policing Forum.

The Amasina Muva dance group entertained the audience at Sunday’s launch.

While emphasising the importance of teaching and encouraging young maidens to prioritise self-care and uphold purity until marriage, Shandu highlighted the lack of attention given to the upbringing and development of boys, ultimately shaping their future.

During the three-day camp, the young men immersed themselves in the wisdom shared by a diverse range of speakers.

The programme not only focused on instilling a sense of responsibility among the boys but also provided them with a safe platform to voice the challenges they encounter as today’s youth.

As the programme gains momentum, plans are underway for its expansion into Maphumulo, Mandeni and Ndwedwe.
