Ballito ballerinas on international stage

All three ballerinas are coached by Taryn Makaab Smit of Break-Thru Dance Studio and hope to bring back silverware after competing across solo, duet and group categories.

Three Ballito ballerinas are ready to take on dancers from around the globe at the upcoming South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC).

Jane McMurchie (17), Olivia Wynne (12) and Sophie White (11) will fly the North Coast’s flag alongside 10 other KwaZulu-Natal representatives against an expected “in-person” field of 60 dancers.

The SAIBC is recognised as Africa’s premier junior ballet competition and will return to Cape Town’s Artscape Theatre for its landmark tenth edition from July 23-26.

Aside from the in-person field, the competition has added a virtual element this year where dancers from around the world can enter via a recorded video.

McMurchie will compete in the senior division (ages 17-22), while Wynne and White take on the scholars category (ages 9-12).
