Ballito crime spike concern

Ballito is experiencing a concerning rise in criminal activity, particularly targeting holiday accommodation establishments.

Ballito Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Morné Steffens said reports of criminal activity have surged in recent weeks and is more pronounced during loadshedding.

He said many affected property owners fail to activate alarms or secure their premises properly.

Steffens said some vacation rental hosts do not adequately inform their guests about the existing crime concerns in Ballito, and do not inform them about accessing and activating alarm systems, thereby leaving them vulnerable.

“Both residents and holidaymakers are urged to take precautions, especially during the night. Essential items such as laptops, keys, wallets, handbags and cellphones are the primary targets for thieves.

“These valuables must be secured in a safe location when not in use. Many residents are also found leaving their gates open at night during and after loadshedding,” said Steffens.

He stressed that the lack of illumination during loadshedding exacerbates the crime situation, making the neighborhood prone to criminal activity.

Residents are encouraged to invest in solar lights to ensure well-lit homes and streets, potentially deterring criminals and providing a safer environment.

Recent incidents have shown that garden sheds are also being targeted, resulting in the theft of valuable tools and equipment.

“To counter this, it is recommended to fortify these structures with quality locks and burglar bars on windows. Installing a wireless alarm system can add an extra layer of security at outbuildings where valuable equipment is often stored.”

The Ballito Neighbourhood Watch is actively seeking more community involvement to combat this rising threat.

“We need more patrollers who can spare just two hours per shift once a week.

“Volunteers are also needed for daytime patrols, acting as vigilant eyes and ears to identify and report suspicious activities,” said Steffens.

The Watch’s WhatsApp group includes several security companies and ensures swift response to crime incidents.
