Wings of Hope on a mission to promote mental well-being
The organisation will at no cost offer transformational life-coaching sessions to address and improve the mental well-being of groups of people in companies, societies and other organisations.
Established to help people cope with the trauma of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 unrest and last year’s floods in April and May, Wings of Hope celebrated its official launch at Rain Farm Game and Lodge on Saturday.
Co-director Cheryl Sachse said when the floods struck, she instantly knew they had to respond to the crisis.
“There was a whole community of people reeling. While many people responded with aid in the form of blankets and food, the only way we knew how to help was through mental well-being.
“That was when the idea was born to open our doors to people who felt the strain of trauma taking its toll,” she said.
Life-coaching classes were offered to help people stay on track at no cost.
Wings of Hope entrenched itself as a support pillar for community organisations such as Tongaat and Verulam’s child and family welfare societies, as well as the Rise Up Movement.
Through workshops, staff from these community organisations learned how to better manage and deal with the emotional stress factors commonly associated with their jobs.
Noorun Mahomed of the Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society said they were provided with an opportunity to self-reflect, reassess and rewire their way of thinking.
“They emphasised the importance of self-care, being kind to ourselves so that we could give more of ourselves,” she said.
Geeta Moodley of the Verulam Child and Family Welfare Society said their workers were taught how to deal with the emotional stress they often experience, with Wings of Hope providing a platform for social workers to address their emotions as first responders.
The non-profit company intends to use funds from donations and fundraising efforts for upcoming national outreach workshops and programmes.
