Renowned for their roles in Dulux’s television advertisements, the beloved Joy Dogs made a cheerful appearance in Ballito at the weekend.
The Courier had the pleasure of catching up with both the dogs and their owner, Sue Green while staying at Paws for Thought in Shaka’s Head.
The visit offered a chance to delve deeper into the fascinating world of these exquisite Old English Sheepdogs.
Sue and her canine companions frequently embark on nationwide promotional tours, collaborating with companies like Makro, Builders and Mica, who stock Dulux paint products.
About 15 years ago, Sue started the Joy Dogs organisation with a heartfelt mission to spread happiness through the charm of her dogs.
On occasion, Sue, Yola, Jade and Orion extend their warm presence to retirement homes and schools, where the three dogs serve as emotional support animals.
Remarkably, these dogs start their training as early as three months of age, mastering an array of impressive tricks.
Among their repertoire, they can gracefully leap through hoops and even exhibit a surprising talent for reading. Orion and Yola, in particular, delight in demonstrating their intelligence by responding to commands like sitting or lying down. In a unique test, these remarkable canines can even bark out their ages when asked.
Old English Sheepdogs are known for their considerable price tag, with each dog valued at more than R50 000. They also demand meticulous care and grooming to maintain their distinctive appearance.
Yola, the eldest of the trio at 11 years old, is set to retire this year.
Sue’s daily routine involves dedicating up to an hour of grooming for each of her beloved dogs, a labor of love that keeps her happily occupied with her furry companions.
They will be returning to Johannesburg this week after several promotional visits throughout the province.
