Know the rules about fireworks and how to stay safe

Beautiful to behold but dangerous to handle.

Fireworks are often a subject of controversy and using them incorrectly can make you unpopular with your neighbours.

Here are the rules for KwaDukuza residents:

Fireworks may be discharged on specific days – Guy Fawkes (November 5), Diwali (November 12), and New Year’s Day (January 1, from midday to 2am).

The sale and use of certain fireworks are strictly prohibited, including firecrackers larger than 50mm long and 12mm in diameter, match crackers and firecrackers known as “Bombs” (e.g., Indian King, King India, Classic Foils).

Fireworks cannot be sold to individuals under the age of 16, and children under 16 may not handle or use fireworks unless supervised by an adult.

Fireworks are not allowed inside buildings, on agricultural holdings, at schools, old-age homes, hospitals or within 500 metres of explosives factories or petrol stations.

When setting off fireworks in one’s backyard,, ensure they are at least 20 metres away from the nearest telephone or power line, tree or overhead obstruction.

For organised fireworks displays, written permission is required from the KwaDukuza municipality or the chief fire officer. Advance applications are encouraged to allow public input.

Displays should take place on council-designated premises under council supervision.

No permission is needed for fireworks on days of cultural and religious celebrations, but they must be used within specified times.

Always prioritise safety when using fireworks. Choose a suitable lighting site, wear fire-resistant clothing, check wind direction, and clean up remnants promptly. Read and follow firework instructions.

Do not throw ignited crackers at animals. Maintain a safe distance and never return to a lit firework. Give fireworks ample space to explode without endangering others.
