Ballito gin masters clinch top honours at World Gin Awards
Dedicated to crafting premium product, Karoa Cara Distilling Co uses only fresh botanicals without any additives, ensuring the highest quality.
Winning international awards is becoming second nature for Ballito gin brew masters Elwin and Janie Barnes.
Owners of Karoa Cara Distilling Co, their latest brand offering clinched top spot at the recent prestigious World Gin Awards in London.
Their latest creation, ZuluLarni Wild Dog Gin, earned them the South African Country title for 2024, becoming the only South African distillery to secure this accolade three years in a row – each time with a different spirit.

Dedicated to crafting premium product, Karoa Cara Distilling Co uses only fresh botanicals without any additives, ensuring the highest quality.
But their commitment extends beyond producing high-end spirits. Their ZuluLarni Safari gin range donates a percentage of sales to the Nkombe Rhino initiative, supporting frontline efforts in wildlife protection.
In a tribute to this cause, they have also launched a special gin edition, the ZuluLarni-Nkombe Rhino.
Karoa Cara’s successes have sparked exciting new developments as they prepare to export their full range to France from this month, marking a significant milestone for the company.
Apart from its signature gins, diversification has already been introduced with its new “Vark & Bull” herbal liqueur and “Vark & Vuur” whiskey-based liqueur.
Next up will be the upcoming launch of distillery’s barrel-aged rum.
From humble beginnings to global recognition, Karoa Cara continues to impress.
It was a tough start for the Barnes couple after deciding to venture into the creative world of distilling. Just after launch in 2020, the Covid pandemic hit, putting brakes on all their plans – including a two-year delay in obtaining a licence.
But their resilience paid off. Once they launched their first gin in 2021 – which won them their first World Gin Award – things have obviously gone swimmingly.
The distillery is located at Imbonini Business Park in Shaka’s Head.
