Golfers swing into action for Orphan Fund

The fund focuses on at-risk children and has helped thousands through the 13 causes and charities it directly supports.

North Coast golfers went low in score and high in spirit in support of The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund last week.

A near full field teed off at Umhlali Country Club on Thursday afternoon, enjoying mostly great golf and a variety of refreshments on sponsored tee boxes around the course.

But it was the team of Glenda Hickman, Paddi Reich, Ailsa Drummond and Elmarie Brett who defended their 2023 title, winning comfortably with a massive 100 points total.

It was a perfect symmetrical 18, with the fourball delivering 50 points on each nine hole stretch to earn a well deserved victory and a host of prizes.

Such was the depth of the sponsored prize pool that almost every golfer – even those in teams with less than 70 points – came away with something great.

Aside from the overall competition, John Howie took home the closest to the pin prize on the 4th hole, while Xolani Sigasa grabbed the same on the 18th hole.

Dominic Collett, Pete Cronje, Simon Glaister and Cobus Oelofse.

And it was made very clear who the best driver of the ball in the field was, as Wayne Eve managed the longest drive on both the 5th and 10th holes.

Radio personality Darren Maule turned prize-giving into a barrel of laughs and pushed auction bidders to spend far more than they intended.

Jacqueline Herbst tees off on the 14th.

“Thank you to all the incredible sponsors who supported the day, Umhlali Country Club for hosting and to all of the golfers who came out in support,” said Orphan Fund co-ordinator, Charmaine Premlal.

Wayne Eve was the big driver on the day, winning both longest drive prizes. Handing over his prize is Orphan Fund founder Rose Stephenson.

“The Orphan Fund is able to continue doing its work because of days like these and we sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts. Special thanks to Halewood, Distell, SupplyLink, Vencasa and La Vita Spa for their support.”

Funds raised from the event are ploughed directly back into the community, with the Orphan Fund establishing a wide presence across the area in its 21 years of operation.

Every cent is valuable, particularly in times of economic hardship when donations are less frequent.
