Importance of voting echoed by Ballito residents as special votes kick off election week
South Africans head to polls today.
Hundreds of thousands of South Africans have already voted – and today (May 29) is your opportunity to make your vote count in the elections.
An estimated 76 000 people voted abroad earlier this month, while 1.6 million registered for special votes on Monday and Tuesday.
Special voters were split between those able to make it to voting stations, but unable to do so on Wednesday, and those who were immobile and were visited by election workers at their homes.
In Ward 6 alone, around 250 residents voted at the Ballito Library across the two days, with many thousands more doing so across KwaDukuza and the country.
It ensured as many people as possible were able to exercise their constitutional right to vote, while also giving election workers a chance to streamline their systems before the big day.
Ballito residents the Courier spoke to on Tuesday said they felt it was a particularly important election year.
“Voting is simply imperative. I was born in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and my family moved to South Africa in 1972 in search of a better life,” said Andre Erasmus.
“I have seen first hand how a country can go downhill and we need to vote to make sure that does not happen here.”
For regular voters, the polling stations will be open between 7am and 9pm on May 29.
Make sure to take your South African ID. No other forms of identification will be accepted.
