Entrepreneurship takes center stage as iLembe Chamber kicks off annual competition
The 10-week programme offers intensive business modelling, tuition and practical application.
The iLembe Chamber of Commerce has launched its 14th annual Entrepreneur Competition, reinforcing its commitment to supporting small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the district.
Mozambik group of restaurants CEO, Brett Michielin, was keynote speaker at the launch last week.
He shared his journey from opening a small 40-seater restaurant in Ballito in 2005 to building Mozambik into a leading franchise with more than 40 outlets across South Africa and internationally.
His story highlighted the challenges and opportunities faced by entrepreneurs, offering inspiration to this year’s participants.
“Entrepreneurs are part of the solution in terms of economic growth and job creation, so use your sideways brain and be brave. Remember, the person to pull a trigger first normally wins.
“Challenges will hit you as an entrepreneur. However, you must educate yourself on cash flow, keep your personal expenses out of your business and don’t buy what you can’t afford,” said Michielin.
Since its inception, the Entrepreneur programme has significantly impacted the local economy. It has supported 278 community-based businesses, which have reported a 50% growth in revenue post-participation.
Additionally, the programme has created 261 new jobs, averaging a cost of R2 520 per job. With more than 13 500 tuition hours and
4 000 mentoring hours provided, the programme demonstrates its dedication to fostering business development.
Designed in collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the 10-week programme offers intensive business modelling, tuition and practical application. Participants receive mentorship from accredited iLembe Chamber mentors across various sectors and professions.

This year, the competition seeks to attract the best SMME talent in the district, selecting 20 SMMEs to participate. Entries are open for eight weeks, with the first tuition session scheduled for July 27.
Entrepreneurs will gain critical business skills, receive valuable mentorship and develop comprehensive business plans to drive their businesses forward.
In addition to business development funding and marketing support, finalists will have the opportunity of showcasing their potential and advancing their businesses.
The programme is funded with the support of partners, The North Coast Courier, Engie Peakers Operations, Enterprise iLembe, Airports Company SA and Siza Water.
Competition entry forms are available for download on the iLembe Chamber’s website (ilembechamber.co.za) and The Entrepreneur’s website (theentrepreneur.net.za).
Forms can also be collected from the iLembe Chamber offices and the local economic development offices of all municipalities.
