Spring tide to reach its peak today

Parents must ensure children are supervised at all times when near water.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has warned of the spring tide that will reach its peak today, before gradually subsiding towards the middle of next week.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said residents must exercise caution during the upcoming full moon Spring tide, which coincides with the Winter Solstice.

The effects of the full moon Spring tide will be increasingly noticeable along coastlines. This natural phenomenon, driven by the moon’s gravitational pull, results in two daily high tides that are higher than usual and two daily low tides that are lower than usual.

Bathers, boaters, paddlers, sailors, shoreline anglers and coastal hikers should remain vigilant.

The outgoing tides during Spring tide can pose significant dangers, especially as they intensify.

He said winter storms and cold fronts could exacerbate already hazardous conditions around the coastline during this period.

Heavy rainfall in some areas may lead to fast-flowing rivers and dams, presenting additional risks for bathers, boaters and paddlers.

He encouraged the public to follow the South African Weather Service (SAWS) daily forecasts and consult tide tables to stay updated on conditions.

Boaters, paddlers, and sailors are strongly advised to wear life-jackets, carry safety equipment, and use the free NSRI SafeTrx smartphone app for added security.

Parents must ensure children are supervised at all times when near water.

“With the school holidays in full swing, we appeal to everyone enjoying our waters to prioritize safety. Let’s work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for all,” said Lambinon.
