Ballito residents rally to rebuild Tongaat crèche in tornado aftermath

Qoqisizwe Crèche was built in 1984 and caters for 115 children aged two to four.

Qoqisizwe Crèche, one of the oldest in Magwaveni, Tongaat, is being rebuilt thanks to Ballito residents who have rallied to help.

The crèche was among the many buildings severely damaged by last month’s tornado.

It was built by Mandlenkosi Ntuli (70) in 1984 and caters for 115 children aged two to four years old.

“We were planning to celebrate the crèche’s 40th anniversary at the end of the year, and it was painful to watch our work get blown away by the strong wind. The walls were cracked, and we were left with no choice but to demolish the whole building, which had five rooms and a hall,” said Ntuli.

He built the facility after the birth of his first child. The crèche is a place of safety for children while their parents are at work.

Ntuli employs seven teachers, a cleaner, a cook and a security guard. All these people are currently not working while the crèche is being rebuilt.

The foundation for the new Qoqisizwe Crèche has already been laid.

“I do not know how to thank the Ballito community and all the businesses that have come together to help us. There are too many to mention, but I want them to know that we are very grateful and will always be proud and thankful to have them as our neighbours,” said Ntuli.

Ballito resident Eduard Louw, who is spearheading Operation Clean Tongaat, said the operation started as a small project to help those in need.

Through the generosity of Ballito residents and businesses, they plan to go further and help rebuild other crèches around Tongaat.

“We want to thank everyone who has helped, from those who took part in the fundraising race held at Sugar Rush Park to the entire business community that has been very supportive since day one. What we have witnessed gives us hope,” said Louw.

He also thanked Tongaat Hulett for allowing them to use their offices to keep donated items safe and as a distribution point.
