Esenembe community demands justice after tragic dog mauling of 19-month-old Ayabonga Sidumo

In a disturbing trend, a grandmother and her three-year-old grandchild also suffered critical injuries in a separate dog attack in KwaDukuza last week.

The community of Esenembe in Upper Tongaat is demanding justice following the death of 19-month-old Ayabonga Sidumo who was savagely mauled by dogs last week.

In the same week, a 67-year-old woman and her three-year-old grandchild suffered critical injuries after being attacked by a rottweiler on Ebrahim Drive in KwaDukuza.

Speaking on the death of the toddler, KwaDukuza Ward 21 councillor, Nkululeko Sithole, said Ayabonga was playing with two other children last Monday when two or more dogs (the number could not be confirmed) attacked them.

Two of the children fled into a nearby household where two other children were present. While they escaped unharmed, Ayabonga was set upon, suffering fatal injuries.

“We suspect rabies, but the dog owner, a farmer, is not cooperating with us to confirm this and help us seek justice. He denies that his dogs were involved in the attack,” said Sithole.

The owner of the dogs responsible allegedly resides about 500 metres from where the child was killed.

Sithole emphasised that legal action must be taken and that the dog owner should assist the family with funeral arrangements.

Tongaat police spokesperson, Captain Jasanathan Naidoo, confirmed that the dog owner has been identified and a case of culpable homicide opened.

Municipal by-laws and regulations state all dog owners must ensure their pets are securely contained within their properties at all times.

The Courier’s attempts to reach the farmer for comment have been unsuccessful.

In the dog attack in KwaDukuza, it was the family rottweiler that was responsible. The dog allegedly attacked the young girl when she entered their yard. The grandmother rushed to intervene and was also injured.
