Ballito oyster festival supports young leukaemia patient

Community rallies to shuck for a cause.

An exciting variety of oyster dishes enticed residents to Mozambik on Saturday, as did the opportunity to raise funds for young leukaemia patient, Liam Verhoef.

The Ballito restaurant hosted an Oyster Festival offering fresh oysters with four unique toppings.

Leigh Chapman with Kyra (6) and Jonathan Godinho.

Diners had their pick of Asian Tetsuya, apple and horseradish, Mozasco and Lemon Caviart, or jalapeno, lime and cucumber granita to go with the slippery seafood delicacy.

And by digging in, they were also doing good for 11-year-old Liam, from Pretoria.

Denzel and Shiloh (3) Chetty.

“Liam’s dad Bertie is a friend and they have been having a difficult time since his diagnosis,” said Mozambik founder, Brett Michielin.

“We decided to put together this festival as a fundraiser for them and a portion of all the oysters sold will be donated, along with proceeds from the water slide.”

Morgan Wessels and Chelsea Sykes.

You can find out more about Liam’s journey with leukaemia and how to donate by searching ‘Liam Verhoef backabuddy’.

Freddy L kept the crowds entertained.
