Captain Pillay bids farewell to Umhlali Saps

Pillay gained national recognition when he was crowned South Africa’s first Integrity Idol in 2016.

Well-known spokesperson and face of the Umhlali police station, captain Vinny Pillay, is set to start an exciting new chapter in his career.

On December 1, he will step into his new role as a lieutenant colonel and shift commander at Verulam Saps.

Pillay has been a cornerstone of the Umhlali station for seven years as captain and spokesperson, earning widespread respect for his dedication and strong rapport with the community.

“I began my police training in July 1993 at Chatsworth Police Training College and started my career with the Provincial Protection Unit in Durban in January 1994. After five years there, I transitioned to shifts at Saps Umhlali. Those years have been some of the most rewarding of my life,” said the 54-year-old Tongaat resident.

In 2016, Pillay gained national recognition when he was crowned South Africa’s first Integrity Idol, a title that honours honest and effective public servants.

The global campaign, active in countries such as Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan, aims to inspire future leaders by celebrating those who exemplify integrity and public service.

Captain Vinny Pillay was always involved in community charity events.

Although excited about his new position, Pillay admitted he would miss the community in the Umhlali police station precinct.

“I will miss the community the most because I am where I am because of them. Their unwavering support has meant the world to me. Whether it was leading charity initiatives or seeking donations for the underprivileged, the community was always there to help. I also owe so much to my team at Umhlali. Our teamwork made everything possible,” said Pillay.

His decision to take on his new role was motivated by a desire to spend more time with his family, but it comes with bittersweet emotions.

Known for his humility and genuine care for others, Pillay remains steadfast in his commitment to serving and protecting communities as he transitions to Verulam.

“I am thrilled to take up this new post and look forward to the challenges and opportunities it will bring. My dedication to safeguarding and uplifting the community remains as strong as ever,” he concluded.
