KwaDukuza Southern side in the dark

Repairs are ongoing on the main feeder line and power restoration is anticipated later today.

Large parts of the Southern region, including Ballito, of the KwaDukuza municipal area remain without electricity following a series of faults that have disrupted supply from the Eskom Driefontein point of supply.

Municipal spokesperson Sifiso Zulu said a cable fault at the Driefontein supply point was identified yesterday, alongside additional issues involving blown jumpers at the Driefontein substation.

“Because it will take longer to locate and repair the fault, the Municipality energised power from Shakaskraal. However, due to the overload situation, the power supply from this source is limited,” said Zulu.
To manage the strain, the municipality has implemented load reduction measures.

“This means that we had to cut supply to residential customers and energise business customers. Residential customers will be energised gradually as the overload situation subsides,” he said.

Residents are urged to minimize their electricity usage by switching off non-essential appliances to help alleviate the overload.

Repairs are ongoing on the main feeder line and power restoration is anticipated later today.

However, specific areas are facing unique challenges. In Sheffield, electricians are still working to locate the fault.

Once the fault is pinpointed, they will be able to assess the required repairs and provide an estimated restoration time.

In Zimbali, a faulty mini substation reported yesterday is in the process of being replaced.

Zulu noted that adverse weather conditions last night delayed progress. The new mini substation is expected to be operational by the end of the day.

Zulu acknowledged the frustration experienced by affected residents and businesses.

“The Municipality appreciates the inconvenience the power failures have caused and would like to apologise to all the affected customers. Your understanding and patience are always appreciated.”

Residents are encouraged to remain informed through official municipal communication channels for further updates.
