Ballito teen walks again after horrific crash
Hané van der Merwe's remarkable road to recovery.
Ballito teenager Hané van der Merwe, who was critically injured in a car crash in Portugal, has returned home and is making steady recovery.
The 19-year-old former Miss Ballito finalist fought her way back from the brink of death after a car accident near the Portuguese town of Porto on October 18 while travelling with her boyfriend, Miguel Nicholson (19). Although Miguel’s injuries were less severe, Hané’s condition was critical.
On December 10, after being medically cleared to travel, Hané arrived in South Africa via air ambulance, accompanied by a paramedic and a doctor. From King Shaka International Airport she was first transferred to Busamed Gateway Private Hospital in Umhlanga and is now undergoing rehabilitation at Nurture iLembe in Ballito. The journey, costing R2.6-million rand, was covered by her travel insurance.

“It is wonderful that she is closer to home. She is now walking with assistance and even shows a bit of her sense of humour. She still needs two more surgeries in the new year, but over the past two months her progress has been remarkable,” said her father, Francois van der Merwe.
The two former Curro Salt Rock matriculants were both admitted to Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital and Miguel was later discharged. Hané, however, suffered extensive injuries, including a torn diaphragm, a fractured back, a broken femur, broken ribs and complications from a fat embolism and intestinal ischaemia. She underwent multiple surgeries, including a craniotomy to relieve brain pressure and intricate procedures to repair her back and leg. She remained in a medically induced coma for weeks as her family waited and prayed for her recovery.

On November 9, Hané responded to Miguel’s voice by opening her eyes. Two days later, she squeezed her family’s hands in recognition of their presence. By November 14, doctors successfully performed critical back fusion surgery and repaired her femur. Just three days later, her family rejoiced as Hané sat upright, smiled and waved, no longer needing a ventilator.
“There are so many people to thank. Special thanks to our neighbour Annelize van Zyl who initiated a BackaBuddy campaign, the Nicholson family and Miguel who supported us every step of the way.
“To everyone locally and abroad who has supported us through prayers and financial contributions, we are deeply thankful. Miguel still visits her every day, and we are humbled by the outpouring of kindness,” said Francois.
