Become inspired by the retired at the Ballito Probus Club

The popular social club for professional retirees hosts an interesting speaker at each of their monthly meetings.

Ken Lever, an architect with a passion for travel and design, is bringing together retired professionals and seniors through Probus North Coast.

Lever started Probus (Professional Retired Organisation of Business Executives) on the North Coast about two and a half years ago after leaving the Ballito Rotary Club. With around 60 Probus clubs nationwide, the organisation provides a network for retired professionals looking to stay engaged and socially active.

Lever’s goal is to encourage retirees to socialise, stay active, and enjoy the company of like-minded individuals.

The North Coast’s membership has grown to over 40 people. Last week, 27 Probus members attended a talk by Carol Allan, former chair of the Durban Art Deco Society, on the history and preservation of Durban’s Art Deco buildings.

Former Durban Art Deco Society chair, Carol Allan, gave an hour-long presentation into the history and current state of Durban’s art deco buildings to Probus members.

“We are trying to get older people interested in getting out, not just sitting at home,” said Lever.

“We invite interesting and stimulating speakers to talk about a wide range of topics to help keep us active and connected. We want people get out and do things, meet and talk to each other.”

Meetings are on the third Monday of every month at Simbithi Country Club. Each meeting features a guest speaker, followed by lunch at the Fig Tree Restaurant.

Lever was born in Cape Town but attended school in Zimbabwe. The semi-retired architect studied his first degree at the University of Cape Town and second degree in Edinburgh, Scotland.

There were 27 Probus members in attendance at the most recent meeting.

Lever first worked in KZN in 2008 when King Shaka Airport was being built, before doing work for the 2010 FIFA World Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium. He and his wife, Frances, fell in love with KZN and decided to settle on the North Coast in 2013.

“Things began to unravel in Zimbabwe, so my wife and I came back in 2012, and decided to buy a house in Ballito. We’ve been here ever since. We do not have any specific social agenda and are mainly interested in contact, making new friends and stimulating the mind. The club is about mental stimulation, communication, learning, interaction and friendship.”
