All KwaDukuza beaches temporarily closed for bathing
The municipality made the decision because of rough seas and discoloured water after heavy rains.
No swimming will be allowed at KwaDukuza beaches until conditions improve and discoloured water dissipates.
The decision to temporarily suspend bathing at all beaches across the KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) coastline was announced this afternoon.
There are seven lifeguarded beaches in KDM: Zinkwazi Main Beach, Blythedale Main Beach, Tinley Manor Main Beach, Salt Rock Main Beach, Thompson’s Bay, Willard Beach and Clarke Bay.
KDM lifeguard superintendent, Bongani Xulu, said debris and waste had been washed into the sea after heavy rains caused rivers to flood.
“This may take up to two days to clear, but we will monitor the situation daily. As soon as it is safe, we will reopen the beaches,” said Xulu.
“We urge residents to understand that this is a necessary safety measure and appeal for their co-operation in avoiding swimming.”
While bathing is prohibited, all beach precincts, including parks, parking lots, and other facilities, remain open to the public.
Approved events at KwaDukuza beaches may proceed, but attendees are strictly advised not to swim.
