New speed hump coming to Ballito Drive after two fatal crashes
The hump will be installed to make the Seaward Estate intersection safer for turning cars.
A speed hump is being installed outside Seaward Estate on Ballito Drive following two fatal accidents at the intersection.
The KwaDukuza municipality began work on Monday. The hump is located on the blind corner about 40 metres before Seaward’s gatehouse entrance on Ballito Drive. The speed hump will cross both lanes to make motorists reduce speed at the intersection.
Ward 30 councillor, Jack Abrahams, lobbied for speed humps in December after the most recent fatal motorcycle accident in November. It was the second time in eight years a biker driving up Ballito Drive died after being hit by a car exiting Seaward Estate.

There was, however, no money for two speed humps this financial year because the budget was already allocated to speed humps in four other wards (4, 6, 21 and 22). Abrahams said a second speed hump might be possible at a later date.
“If the first speed hump is effective, we will push for another one after the new financial year starts, which is in July,” he said.
Meanwhile the Seaward Estate Master Homeowners Association are investigating the viability of installing a second speed hump, said representative Rieva McMurtrie.
