Biker convoy rolls into Ballito to raise funds for children’s homes

This year’s edition of the annual ‘Homeless Run’ from Mpumalanga to Ballito drew nine riders.

A convoy of big-hearted bikers thundered into Ballito on Saturday afternoon, all revved up to raise funds for children’s homes.

The Homeless Run, which began three years ago with just four riders, has grown into a meaningful tradition.

Every first weekend of March, bikers make the 500km journey from Standerton in Mpumalanga to Ballito, bringing both generosity and passion for the open road.

“We had 28 riders last year, but this time, only nine could make it due to personal reasons. Still, we’re not discouraged. Our goal is to have at least 50 riders next year,” said Andre du Plessis, founder of the Homeless Run and a member of the Mpumalanga biker’s club, Boanerges.

Riders from different clubs, as well as independent bikers, joined this year’s event, united by a shared purpose.

Besides the fact that Ballito gives them 500km from Mpumalanga, for Du Plessis, the destination is deeply personal.

“I lived in Mandeni for five years, and those were the best years of my life. So the North Coast is close to my heart and of course, we get to see the sea,” he said.

He thanked the Ballito Ski-boat Club for warmly hosting the riders.
