Condolences pour in for victims of tragic Mandeni bus accident
Nine members of the Twelve Apostles Church in Trinity died after a suspected burst tyre caused the accident.
A devastating bus accident on the N2 near Mandeni on Sunday afternoon claimed the lives of nine people, including a four-year-old girl, and left many others injured.
The victims were members of The Twelve Apostles Church in Trinity, travelling from Richards Bay to Nkobongo when the tragedy struck.
Reports suggest that a tyre burst caused the bus to roll down a steep embankment.
Phumlani Vezi, operations manager for IPSS Security in Mandeni, was among the first responders. He described the scene as one of the worst he had ever witnessed.
“When I arrived, people were trying to climb up the embankment, but others were struggling due to their injuries. Our priority was to assist those who could be moved and get them to safety,” said Vezi.

The Twelve Apostles Church in Trinity provincial overseer Sbongiseni Mpungose expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.
“On behalf of our church leadership, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the departed and the broader church community. The loss of our brothers and sisters leaves a gaping hole in our hearts, but we find strength in their faith and kindness. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery and pray for their healing,” said Mpungose.
He thanked the MEC for transport and human settlement Siboniso Duma, and local government leaders for their swift and compassionate response. He said announcements regarding funeral arrangements will be made in consultation with the affected families.
KwaDukuza municipal spokesperson Sifiso Zulu said the municipality is concerned about the high number of accidents on this stretch of the N2.
“We are working with the KZN transport department to identify the root causes and find solutions, especially as the Easter travel period approaches,” said Zulu.
He said the municipality, in collaboration with the transport department, will assist the victims’ families and ensure dignified funerals.
