Holi festival brings colour and joy to Tongaat
Despite the rain, community celebrates unity with vibrant Holi festivities.
Vishwaroop Temple and Dharamshala celebrated Holi in spectacular fashion in Tongaat on Saturday.
The event went ahead despite the weekend’s heavy rain showers, with stalls offering everything from Indian street food to eastern wear and Radio Hindvani broadcasting live.

The festivities culminated in the religious observation of lighting a bonfire, followed by the traditional throwing of powdered colour and dancing to bhangra music.

“Holi is a major Hindu festival celebrated as the festival of colours, love and spring (northern hemisphere),” said Vishwaroop Temple secretary, Dhanjay Kassie.
“The event was a resounding success. The playing with colour and the simultaneous bhangra party was enjoyed by everyone.”

Holi celebrates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna. Additionally, the day signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it commemorates the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu. Originating on the Indian subcontinent, Holi is predominantly celebrated across India and Nepal but has also spread to other parts of Asia and the Western world through the Indian diaspora.

For many Hindus, Holi marks an opportunity to reset relationships, resolve conflicts and cleanse emotional impurities from the past.
“Holi signifies a time of rebirth and rejuvenation and is now globally celebrated as a way of fostering unity and joy in an explosion of colour, music and dance,” said Kassie.
