Children forced to wade through stream as pedestrian bridge in Shayamoya goes unfixed since 2022 floods

Other routes are available but can mean a walking detour of a few kilometres, prompting many to choose the stream option.

A washed away pedestrian bridge between Nkobongo and Shayamoya is forcing residents to take risks to avoid long alternative routes.

The bridge washed away in the 2022 floods and with it, a crucial link between the two neighbouring communities. Other options do exist but can add several kilometres of extra walking.

According to Shayamoya resident Philani Pityo, this has prompted residents to rather wade through the stream, which can be dangerous for children or during heavy rain.

“It’s been too long since the floods. Our children are suffering due to the lack of urgency from those in power,” he said.

Shayamoya’s Ward 23 councillor, Collen Mdletshe, acknowledged that recent flash floods have worsened the situation, further damaging what little infrastructure remained.

“We are doing our best to fast-track the project because it impacts both learners and the wider community,” he said.

The KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) recently replaced a similarly washed away bridge in Malende, allowing children of that community to commute to school safely. KDM deputy-mayor, Njabulo Cele, said at the time that flood damaged areas were being assessed as part of the KwaDukuza infrastructure oversight programme.
