Sheffield quilting sisterhood celebrates 25 years of weaving friendship

The Sheffield Nite Owls meet monthly at The Circle to share skills and tips for new and experienced quilters.

The Sheffield Nite Owls quilting guild recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the group’s long history of quilting and friendship.

Founded in 2000 by Roz Burgess at her home in Sheffield Beach, the guild began with just two members, Roz and Sharon Mothiram. Sharon, who remains an active member today, was part of the original duo that set the foundation for what would become a thriving group of quilters.

“Quilting has survived for many centuries. Many early quilts were made purely for warmth using old scraps of fabric out of necessity. Today many quilts are absolute works of art. The fact that Sheffield Nite Owls have survived 25 years and produced wonderful work during that time tells me that quilting is alive and well in our town, and skills are being passed down the generations in the age-old tradition,” said chairperson Sue Freckleton.

The 14-member group meets regularly at The Circle in Ballito on the second Saturday of every month.

“The meetings are a mix of workshops, new projects, finishing personal projects and listening to interesting speakers from the quilting community in KZN,” said Sue.

The group’s mission is not only to provide a space for quilters to share skills and techniques but also to give back to the community with quilts regularly donated to charitable organisations.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the group created ‘Little Quilts of Love’ – small quilts to be donated to an organisation of the same name, which distributes them to parents who have experienced stillbirth.
