Cheers, chukkas and country vibes at popular polo picnic

The day culminated in an exciting match between teams from ADD Construction and SMG.

Polo fans gathered at Oaklands Equestrian Estate on Saturday for a lively day of sport, picnics and live music in the Umhlali countryside.

Blankets were spread, corks popped, and friends gathered along white picket fences as horses thundered across the polo fields. With Pizza Bae dishing out fresh slices and The Old Tin Can pouring crisp G&Ts and craft brews, no one went hungry – or thirsty.

On the field, SMG Ballito narrowly triumphed over ADD Construction in a gripping 10-8 match. Clive and Max Hill, with Kyle Pretorius, led the charge for SMG, while ADD’s spirited trio included Casey Bennet and husband-and-wife duo Scott and Kayla Rattray.

“The rain made it tough,” said Scott, “but the energy was unmatched. This was the best one yet.”

Former SA polo captain Clive Hill agreed: “We were lucky to play after all the rain, but it was a joy as always. Hats off to Oaklands.”

As the last chukka ended, the day slipped into golden hour. The Kickstands took the stage, and the lawn turned dance floor.

“It felt like a country music festival meets the Hamptons,” said spectator Morgan Tremearne. “There was something special about that sunset.”

For Deandra van Schalkwyk of Oaklands, the day was a win.

“Polo is still new to many here,” she said. “But the vibe, the mingling, the music – it was all top-notch.”
