Commuter relief as long-awaited R5.6-million shelter opens at Ballito taxi rank

The R5.6-million project included site preparation, minibus loading bays, a steel roof structure, lighting installation and a new stormwater pipeline.

A long-awaited shelter at the Ballito taxi rank was officially opened on Tuesday, offering protection from the elements for thousands of daily commuters.

Since the taxi rank was first handed over to the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association in 2017, residents have raised concerns about the lack of shelter.

For years, commuters queued in the open, enduring scorching heat and heavy rain without cover.

The new structure now offers much-needed relief. Speaking at the handover, KwaDukuza mayor Ali Ngidi said he was glad the project had finished.

“I used to take a taxi here myself. I know what it’s like to stand in the rain or under the blazing sun,” said Ngidi.

“This is a significant step forward, and while we plan further upgrades, people now at least have some protection.”

The R5.6-million project includes minibus loading bays, a steel roof structure, lighting installation and a new stormwater pipeline.

The existing drainage system was also unblocked to prevent water pooling. In addition to infrastructure improvements, the project created employment for six general labourers and 12 skilled workers were hired locally.

Commuters welcomed the upgrade. Thabisile Ndlanzi, a regular rank user, said she’s relieved the days of standing in the rain are over.

“We used to be soaked. Now, with the shelter, we are truly grateful. Thank you to the municipality,” she said.

Taxi association spokesperson Siyabonga Ntombela applauded the development but noted that space is still an issue.

“The rank is too small for the growing number of taxis and passengers. We hope it will be extended in future,” he said.

Ngidi said the municipality would explore options to acquire the adjacent land for expansion.

He also mentioned plans to upgrade vendor amenities, including building shelters and toilet facilities.

Ward 30 councillor Jack Abraham and iLembe Chamber of Commerce CEO Cobus Oelofse praised the project, noting its impact on daily commuter comfort and the local economy.
