Tongaat streets awash in faith for 116th Punguni Kavady procession
Dressed in traditional attire and carrying ornate kavadys, devotees filled the streets with vibrant colour, music and devotion.
Tongaat shimmered in saffron and song as thousands gathered in devotion for the vibrant 116th Punguni Woothira Kavady Mahotsavam on Saturday.
Honouring the Hindu deity Lord Muruga, the colourful procession began at the Outspan grounds and made its way to Brake Village Temple, drawing worshippers from across the region.

Dressed in traditional attire and carrying ornate kavadys, devotees filled the streets with vibrant colour, music and devotion.
The grand chariot bearing Lord Muruga led the way, pulled with reverence by worshippers. The barefoot procession paused for moments of worship as dancers gracefully accompanied the march.

Acts of self-sacrifice, with some devotees pierced from tongue to toe with hooks and needles, reflected deep spiritual dedication. This ancient tradition symbolises the burdens carried in life – and through the journey and kavady offering, devotees pray to Lord Muruga for relief and blessings.

The annual event continues to draw large crowds, not only from Tongaat but from surrounding areas, all coming together to celebrate faith, endurance and divine connection.
