KwaDukuza enters day four of crippling water outage
The district said on Tuesday that the delivery of a replacement generator was expected at the Lower Thukela Water Treatment Works just after midday today.
KwaDukuza residents are enduring a fourth consecutive day without water as supply disruptions continue across multiple areas serviced by the iLembe District Municipality.
The outage began on Saturday following a power supply interruption from Eskom, which severely damaged the high lift pump station at the Lower Thukela Waterworks. The district said progress stalled over the long weekend due to delays in sourcing critical spare parts.
On Monday, the district municipality said their teams were still working on restoring water supply and had “dispatched all available resources to resolve the crisis as soon as possible.”
The district said on Tuesday that the Umngeni-Uthukela water required the delivery of a replacement generator, which was expected to arrive at the Lower Thukela Water Treatment Works just after midday today.
Affected areas include Zinkwazi, San Souci, Darnall, Lindelani, Nonoti, Blythedale, Saunders Reservoir, Glenhills, Warrenton, Stanger Manor, High Ridge, Shakaville, Townview, Mbozamo, Honolulu Reservoir, Groutville, Ntshawini and Melville.
In response to the crisis, community members and political parties have stepped in to assist. A water drive has been launched in KwaDukuza, with drop-off points established at Ayer Rock Guest House and the White House Centre.
Residents are encouraged to donate sealed 5-litre bottles of water.
In ward 22, Democratic Alliance councilor Privi Makhan has also asked residents to donate water at the Salt Rock Library for distribution to those in need.
DA caucus leader Krsna Sing confirmed that tankers from various sources including iLembe District, Siza Water and private operators had been deployed on Monday to help aid those affected.
“We are now working on bringing more private tankers on board, which we will coordinate to better serve affected communities,” he said.
The DA will start water distribution this afternoon.
