Chaka’s Rock author Janet Barry is using the power of storytelling to raise awareness for endangered species with her debut book, Pangolin Prophecy.
Pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammals, targeted for their scales and meat. Despite there being nine different species of pangolin, only one can be spotted in South Africa, the Temminck’s ground pangolin, also known as the Cape pangolin.
Barry, who was inspired by her family’s encounter with a pangolin in Limpopo’s Waterberg region, brings to life the urgent need for conservation through a powerful blend of adventure and environmental advocacy in her book.
“Pangolins have been locally extinct in KZN for the past 20-40 years. Only recently have there been attempts to reintroduce them into private reserves,” she said.
The story follows Kgaga, a pangolin navigating the challenges of her habitat, and Baboloki, a young Tswana man dedicated to protecting pangolins and other wildlife in his tribal area. When Kgaga gives birth to a vulnerable pup, the duo must work together to safeguard their home. With illustrations by Caroline Janse van Rensburg, the book provides a creative yet informative portrayal of the pangolin’s struggles.
“Pangolins are critically endangered, and their numbers continue to decrease due to illegal trade. This is why I made it the first story in the series – to raise awareness,” Janet said.
The second book in the series, Ostrich Odyssey, is already in production and will focus on the ostriches of Yzerfontein on South Africa’s West Coast.
Janet and her family moved to Chaka’s Rock in 2011, and the surrounding nature has greatly influenced her writing.
“My environment inspires me tremendously, as I feel a very strong connection to nature in this town,” she shared.
Pangolin Prophecy is available for purchase at Big Tree Africa at the Litchi Orchard and will soon be distributed by Jacana Media.
Janet’s books aim to educate readers about the importance of wildlife conservation and inspire action to protect endangered animals.
