Community rallies to save Ashton Ballito teacher’s sight

Zama Mbonambi can now afford vision-saving corneal surgery, but needs more support to complete her treatment.

Zama Mbonambi (27) is on the way to having her vision restored, thanks to the generosity of the Ballito community.

The assistant teacher at Ashton International College Ballito was recently diagnosed with keratoconus, a progressive eye condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge, leading to distorted vision.

To halt the progression of the disease, she urgently requires corneal cross-linking surgery, a procedure that strengthens the cornea. The cost of the surgery is R9 134.93 per eye.

Zama’s close friend and colleague, Samantha Kegel, launched a BackaBuddy fundraising campaign to help cover the costs.

“Our Ballito community showed up in the most incredible way,” said Samantha.

“People donated, offered help and sent messages of encouragement. I was completely overwhelmed, not just by the generosity, but by the kindness and hope that poured in for Zama. I felt proud to be a part of this amazing community.”

The campaign successfully raised enough to cover the cost of both eye operations. However, additional funds are still needed for follow-up appointments and recovery medication.

Zama, who lives in Etete, expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who made her surgery possible.

“This surgery represents hope and a chance to feel whole and pursue my dreams without limitations,” she said.

Zama has been battling her deteriorating vision since 2017. Financial constraints prevented her from accessing treatments like hard contact lenses or corrective surgery, causing her condition to worsen over the years.

Despite the challenges, Zama is described as a gentle, compassionate and deeply committed teacher. She recently completed her Bachelor of Education degree at the University of South Africa and dreams of one day having her own classroom, where she can inspire young minds and share her love of learning.
