Monthly Zimbali beach clean-up gets Pro boost
The clean-up is held on the last Sunday of every month.
Community spirit shone through as volunteers worker together to clean Zimbali Long Beach and raise awareness about recycling.
The regular clean-up enjoyed a boost in visibility thanks to support from the Ballito Pro.

Organiser Mike Gahagan said weather conditions were ideal for the initiative.
“We made a few small changes to incorporate the Ballito Pro, and the response was very encouraging,” said Gahagan.

The clean-up began at 8am from the regular meeting point at Foch Le Roux, with volunteers spreading out to tackle litter along Zimbali’s Long Beach. Despite recent rains and strong ocean currents pushing debris from the Tongaat River mouth, the team remained undeterred.
“We came off the beach a bit earlier this time and held the lucky draw prize-giving at 9.45am. KwikSpar was present to hand out the vouchers, before heading to Willard’s Beach,” he said.

In a creative addition, participants were encouraged to bring two clear bags from home, one to be filled with plastics and the other with paper or cardboard. The bags were carried in a symbolic walk to Willard’s Beach to raise awareness about pollution and recycling.
The monthly clean-up, held on the last Sunday of each month (weather permitting), continues to attract a loyal group of residents committed to protecting the coastline.
