Newborn baby boy rescued from Sundumbili pit latrine

A passer-by heard the baby's cries and called for help.

Sundumbili community members rescued a baby boy after hearing him crying in a pit latrine this morning.

The reportedly newborn baby had been dumped earlier in the morning and likely would have died were it not for the intervention of passers-by.

Jabu, a member of the Sundumbili community, inland of Mandeni, heard the cries when she walked past the pit latrine and called for help.

Together with other community members, she was able to recover the boy and keep him safe until emergency services arrived.

“IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics assessed the baby boy, who was in relatively good health,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.

“He has been transported to Sundumbili Clinic for further care.”
