Palm Lakes potjie competition cooks up culinary delights

Residents enjoyed the warming dishes on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon.

Palm Lakes Estate was brimming with warmth and community spirit on a cold, wet Saturday (July 12) as residents gathered for the second annual Potjie Competition.

Hosted at the estate’s clubhouse by Slumber Teepee Party owners Cimaron Willaert and Cyndi Konar, the event proved that not even the rain could dampen the gees.

Winners The Potjie Pot Pals: Doug Seagar and Derek Mollenzie claimed best potjie and best dressed.

Seven teams entered the cooking competition. Contestants had to be set up and ready to light their fires by 11am, with executive chefs Mika Khan and Hannes Poppmeier starting the tasting at 3pm.

Teams were judged on texture, depth of flavour, aroma, and overall “potjieness” – defined by presentation, authenticity and spirit (gees).

From traditional stews to adventurous international blends, the menu was a feast for the senses. Dishes featured game, seafood, surf and turf and even Spanish, Portuguese and Irish-inspired creations to complement the traditional South African potjiekos.

Adding an educational twist, volunteers from Ndlondlo Reptile Park and IPSS Medical Rescue held a demonstration on handling snake bites and animal-related emergencies, informative for both parents and children.

The Potjie Pot Pals, Derek Mollenzie and Doug Seager, claimed first place with their spicy Portuguese chicken and prawn potjie. The duo also won Best Dressed for their Pora-inspired chef outfits.

“I am surprised with the result, but it is fantastic to win,” said Seager, who was a last-minute entry.

“Today was all about having fun with your family and mates,” added Mollenzie.

Organiser Cimaron Willaert said she hopes to see the event grow next year.
