Hundreds brave the rain to honour the legacy of Chief Albert Luthuli

The annual Luthuli Walk followed a symbolic route through Groutville.

Undeterred by the rain, hundreds gathered on Saturday for the annual Chief Albert Luthuli Walk and Fun Run, retracing the footsteps of Africa’s first Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

The 7.7km walk began at the Luthuli Museum in Groutville and followed a symbolic route through Cranbrook, Malende, Hangoes and Nokukhanya Luthuli Street, ending at the Groutville Sports Field, where a lively celebration greeted participants.

Snokuhle Mthembu, Aphelele Gumede, Sthembiso Mabaso and Nogcebo Msomi.

Hosted by the Luthuli Museum in partnership with Enterprise iLembe, KwaDukuza municipality, iLembe district municipality and the United Congregational Church of Groutville, the event commemorates the life and legacy of Chief Albert Luthuli.

Bongumusa Sishi, Fisokuhle Mhlongo and Prince Mushanya.

This year’s walk was held ahead of the July 21 anniversary of his death in 1967, when he was reportedly struck by a train on a railway bridge over the uMvoti River. While initially ruled an accident, a reopened inquest has cast doubt on that finding, with expert testimony raising questions of possible foul play and a cover-up.

Nomathamsanqa Sony, Thembeni Duma and Nomusa Ngubane.

Beyond remembrance, the event remains a powerful tribute to Chief Luthuli’s enduring ideals of peace, justice and democracy.
