Protests planned as circus comes to town

Animal rights activists will picket on both nights of circus performance next week.

The return of McLaren Circus to Ballito on August 11 and 12 has prompted promises of protests from local animal rights groups.

Animal Wildlife Rescue volunteer Zarina Cooper has called on residents to boycott the event at Townsend Park or otherwise join in on a planned peaceful picket against what they deem unfair animal treatment. Ban Animal Trading will also support the demonstration.

“The Ballito community prides itself on compassion and respect for all wildlife and domestic animals,” said Cooper.

“Community members have the opportunity to make a significant impact by saying ‘No!’ to this form of crude entertainment.”

McLaren Circus has been a regular fixture in Ballito over the years and say they have already sold 300 tickets to the shows as evidence of public support. Circus spokesperson Karl Hildebrandt also categorically denied allegations of animal mistreatment.

“While concerns for animal welfare are always valid and taken seriously, it’s essential to differentiate between animal welfare, which we actively uphold, and animal rights, which often advocates for the complete removal of animals from all human-managed environments,” he said.

“While we recognise the intention behind many animal rights arguments, we believe that promoting responsible, compassionate animal welfare – not total separation from people – is a more effective and sustainable way to ensure the long-term wellbeing of animals in human care.”

McLaren Circus has operated for 20 years and Hildebrandt cited over 7 000 days of consistent animal care from handlers who “dedicate their lives to working with animals – in full public view, nearly every day.” He said all McLaren Circus animals are given regularly veterinary care and continue to be looked after once they have been retired from active performance.
