#Women’sDay: The American woman behind Docrra’s North Coast civic vision
Organisation COO, Mary Kassam, has led a life driven by community service.
From the suburbs of New Jersey to the North Coast, Mary Kassam has led a life driven by community service.
Since moving to Ballito in 2020, Kassam has become well-known to the community through her involvement with the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (Docrra), where she serves as chief operating officer.
Originally from Haddonfield, New Jersey, Kassam holds a BA in Visual Communication Arts with a double minor in French and Italian from Franklin University Switzerland, graduating with distinction. Her global education and field-based learning in several countries, including an internship in Malawi, sparked a lifelong commitment to activism.
“Service and social justice are incredibly important to me,” said Kassam.
“I grew up in a home where giving back was second nature. My parents were always involved in charitable initiatives and that shaped my values.”
Along with her husband of 13 years, Asif, Kassam relocated from Malawi to South Africa after visiting friends in Ballito on a couple of occasions. Just a few days later, Covid-19 arrived. With no family in the country and few friends, she soon found herself drawn into community work which led to a chance meeting with Docrra chairman, Deon Viljoen.
“During lockdown, I was making soup for an initiative on the estate where I live and met Deon. He twisted my arm to get involved and mentored me to be in the leadership role I have at the organisation, today,” she said.
Kassam dedicates her time fully to Docrra, advocating for good governance, environmental stewardship and civic engagement.
“Working with Docrra allows me to contribute in a small way, to bringing those principles to life. Activism is the best hope we have for change.”
Outside of her advocacy, she enjoys yoga, horseback riding and a peaceful life with Asif and their two pets – a three-legged, one-eyed Pomeranian named Enzo and Booboo, the ragdoll cat.
“We did a test run, renting for a few months and we’re still in Ballito. Nothing can match the spirit of South Africans – you are a loving, warm and generous people.”
