KwaDukuza Winter Fair raises R2-million with big turnout

The funds are crucial for KwaDukuza Child Welfare’s continued operation.

The KwaDukuza Child Welfare Winter Fair once again proved to be the heartbeat of the community as thousands flocked to the town for the five-day event last month.

Held at the KwaDukuza Municipal Showgrounds from July 2 to 6, the fundraising drive drew more than 56 000 visitors and raised R2-million to support the organisation’s vital work.

The event offered a vibrant mix of entertainment, shopping and community spirit. The fundraising total amount includes R450 000 raised at a sponsors’ event in June.

“We reached our goal, thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, management, staff and the public who attended the event,” said Karnegie Govender, senior social work manager at KwaDukuza Child Welfare.

The fair’s success is a lifeline for the non-profit organisation, which faces a monthly shortfall of around R260 000 – primarily for operational costs such as petrol, electricity, water, telephone and security, which are not covered by government subsidies.

Despite the fair’s success, the organisation continues to rely on ongoing community support to meet its monthly needs and long-term goals.

“The funds raised will be used to cover the shortfall, but we also invest in capital expenditure such as building renovations and purchasing of new vehicles,” said Govender.

Visitors enjoyed a wide array of attractions, from handcrafted goods and food stalls to thrilling fun fair rides, live music, talent shows, beauty pageants and dance performances. Car enthusiasts were treated to a sound-off and a show-and-shine competition that drew large crowds.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the KwaDukuza community for their incredible support in making this year’s fair such a success.”
