Tongaat Ski Boat Club skippers fire up the pot at popular potjie competition
Over 250 people pulled in for a taste of the potjie deliciousness.
The Tongaat Ski Boat Club came alive with the aroma of simmering stews and the buzz of community spirit at month-end.
More than 250 people gathered for the club’s 10th annual potjie competition at its Westbrook headquarters on August 30. The much-anticipated culinary showdown saw 19 teams go head-to-head, each vying for top honours in what has become a beloved tradition.

“The day was a resounding success, with an excellent turnout of potjie entries and strong support from the public,” said Shaun Cothill, a member of the club’s fundraising committee.

“We hold the potjie competition every year to raise funds for essential maintenance and upgrades to our facilities. This ensures our members can continue to enjoy improved amenities throughout the year,” he said.

The event was not just about food, it was about flavour, flair and friendly rivalry. Three guest judges were tasked with the much-envied challenge of sampling every pot. The panel included Steven Kruger of 45 on Eat Street, Linda Govender Burger from Spice Restaurant and Tim Ungerer of Unilever Food Solutions SA.
After much deliberation, the judges awarded first place to the UBSC team, whose potjie wowed with its depth of flavour and presentation. Butterlicious and Lions Den followed closely in second and third place respectively, with just seven points separating the top three teams.

The Huligans took home the award for Best Stand and Team Gees, bringing unmatched energy and creativity to the competition.
Cothill highlighted the generosity that fuels the event’s success year after year.
“This year, we had some amazing prizes sponsored by our members and friends to hand out to the top-placed teams. The event continues to grow in size and spirit.”
