Ladies dominate Tongaat Ski Boat Club fishing contest
Sheralyn Malgora and Linda Smit both reeled in daga salmon of over 16kg.
Two ladies outmanoeuvred a strong field to claim top honours at the Tongaat Ski Boat Club’s monthly fishing competition on Saturday morning.
Held off the Tongaat River mouth, the event – known as the monthly mug – drew 31 enthusiastic anglers to the water at first light. With calm seas and gentle winds setting the stage for a perfect day of fishing, competitors battled it out until 1pm, followed by a weigh-in an hour later.
Sheralyn Malgora clinched first place with a spectacular 17.75kg dagga salmon catch while fishing aboard Sweet Dreams, captained by her husband Anthony. She was joined by her eight-year-old daughter Harper, the youngest angler on the water.

“I never expected to catch the winning fish; it was a big surprise,” said Sheralyn.
“It was a fun-filled day and it is always great being out on the ocean with family and friends, watching whales and dolphins in the fresh air and sunshine.”
Sheralyn used live mackerel as bait on an old-school KP reel and credited her success to teamwork and good fortune.
“I would like to thank our skipper for putting us on the fish and the Tongaat Ski Boat Club for hosting a great event,” she added.
Hot on her heels was Linda Smit, who secured second place with a 16.65kg daga salmon caught aboard Challenger.

Danial Read reeled in a 17.3kg daga salmon, but his catch came after the weigh-in had closed, leaving him out of the official placings.
Shaun Cothill, a member of the Westbrook Club’s fundraising committee, noted that most of the fish were caught from northern reefs about 50 metres deep.
“The ocean was alive with bait balls, but most of the fish were caught deep out at sea,” said Shaun.
“There are still loads of whales around, so you had to be vigilant and keep your eyes on the ocean at all times.”
The mug concluded with a family and members’ braai, celebrating not only the winners but also the spirit of camaraderie and community that defines the Tongaat Ski Boat Club.
“Overall, it was a day of great fishing, good vibes and lekker prizes,” said Shaun.
