How to properly dispose of unusual domestic waste on the North Coast

Old furniture, appliances and electronic waste all have designated disposal and recycling locations.

That broken couch in the garage, the pile of garden clippings or the old fridge gathering dust – everyone has items they are unsure how to dispose of properly.

While your regular bins handle everyday rubbish, the North Coast offers comprehensive services for many other types of waste, especially items that cannot be collected kerbside.

Waste transfer centres play a key role, offering residents a place to drop off various types of waste for safe and proper disposal.

Understanding the different types of waste is the first step towards disposing of it correctly:

• Domestic waste includes everyday household rubbish like food scraps and packaging.

• Garden waste covers grass clippings, leaves and other plant matter.

• Bulky waste refers to large items such as furniture and mattresses.

• Recyclables include paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and cans.

• Electronic waste (e-waste) consists of items like fridges, computers and mobile phones.

• Commercial waste comes from businesses.

• Construction debris includes building materials and rubble.
