Groutville designer brings kasi chic to the fashion frontline

Bongiwe Mpanza gives her tips on the upcoming fashion trends for summer.

Kasi swagger meets safari-chic and modern elegance at Mawazo Designs, a Groutville-born fashion brand founded by Bongiwe Mpanza.

Established in 2023, the brand specialises in linen wear, outdoor safari styles and custom designs, with prices ranging from R700 to R2 000.

Driven by her passion for fashion, Mpanza honed her skills at the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion Design and has never looked back.

Working from her rented space in Groutville, she brings her creative vision to life through high-quality, unique designs.

“I have always had a love for fashion. My brand celebrates African heritage and offers comfort,” she said.

Mpanza has participated in several programmes to sharpen her skills and continues to develop her craft.

“I even went to China for fashion footwear training,” she said.

The Mawazo Designs store is located in Mnyundwini, Groutville and the brand has recently expanded with a new store in Montclair.

Not sure what to wear this summer? According to Mpanza, 2026 colour trends include:

• Transformative teal, a fusion of dark blue and aquatic green.
• Electric fuchsia, a bold neon shade between pink and purple.
• Blue aura, a softened, greyed blue.

Trending looks include safari chic, fluid tailoring, distressed denim and pirate-inspired details. Think linen suits, wide-leg trousers, safari-style dresses, relaxed denim and oversized jackets.
Her tip for the season?

“Go bold with jewel tones, balance with earthy neutrals and layer eco-linen with sheer textures.”
