Holiday safety boost: North Coast prepares with more patrols, lifeguards and roadblocks

KDM lifeguard superintendent Bongani Xulu said 55 lifeguards will be on duty daily from 6am to 6pm.

Law enforcement agencies have moved into full festive-season mode to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for residents and visitors.

From beach patrols to roadblocks, operations have been stepped up across the region.

A major multi-disciplinary roadblock was held at the N2 Umvoti Toll on Monday, led by iLembe district police with support from community safety and liaison, KwaDukuza municipality traffic and RTI. Officers focused on vehicle roadworthiness, compliance with traffic laws and outstanding fines.

iLembe District Saps spokesperson Priya Nunkumar-Bukum urged the public to remain vigilant during the busy festive season.

Shoppers are warned not to seek help from strangers at ATMs, avoid displaying cash in public and keep personal belongings secure.

“Stokvel members are advised to use electronic transfers where possible, while banking clients are reminded to stop transactions immediately if anything seems suspicious,” she said.

The rise in alcohol-related incidents during the holidays remains a concern. KwaDukuza mayor Siduduzo Gumede, who launched the municipal safety plan at Blythedale Beach last week, said safety is a shared responsibility.

“Public holidays bring large crowds and create environments ripe for assaults, overdoses, drownings and road accidents. We must address crime head-on.”

The municipality has introduced new branded emergency and traffic vehicles to improve visibility and reduce misuse.

KDM lifeguard superintendent Bongani Xulu said 55 lifeguards will be on duty daily from 6am to 6pm. He urged beachgoers to swim only at protected beaches, avoid alcohol and seek help from lifeguards when unsure.

iLembe Chamber CEO Cobus Oelofse said festive readiness extends beyond policing, with all role players, including ward councillors and neighbourhood watches, working together. The Chamber will again support beach by-law enforcement and seasonal cleaning programmes.

Oelofse added that readiness is bolstered by four local beaches earning Blue Flag status for 2025/26: Blythedale, Salt Rock Main, Thompson Bay and Willard Beach.

nicipality has also completed major electrical upgrades to improve network reliability over the holidays, including new 33 kV and 11 kV lines, refurbished substations and ongoing vegetation management. Traffic light repairs remain ongoing.
