Tongaat community marks 120 years at Sunrise Barracks Remembrance Day

Tongaat Section, between Tongaat and the N2, remains a vibrant community to this day.

Over 500 people gathered in Tongaat to honour 120 years of community, heritage and resilience at the Sunrise Barracks Remembrance and Memorial Day on November 22.

Held at Trubel Hall, the celebration paid tribute to the pioneers of Tongaat Section, a settlement between Tongaat town and the N2. Particular focus was placed on the Vadivellu family, whose contributions span three generations and are deeply rooted in the area’s growth.

Established in the early 1900s, Tongaat Section grew from a humble settlement into a culturally rich neighbourhood. Despite early hardships, the community thrived on shared values, mutual support and spiritual diversity. Sundays were traditionally marked by both Hindu and Christian services, reflecting the area’s inclusive spirit.

Guests paid tribute to the pioneers of Tongaat Section.

Among the earliest settlers was Vayapuri Pandaram, who arrived aboard the Pongol and joined the Tongaat Sugar Company (TSC) in 1900. He later transferred to Tongaat Section, where he worked as a driver before serving as a vernacular teacher and respected Hindu priest.

His son, Vadivellu Pandaram, joined TSC in 1947 and worked until his untimely death in 1967. His legacy was carried on by Rodgers Vadivellu, who served TSC for 36 years and is a long-time community leader. Rodgers has dedicated over 40 years to the Tongaat Section Emperumal Temple, helping to lead its reconstruction in the 1980s.

“Today is more than a celebration. It’s a tribute to those who stood strong so we could stand here together,” said Rodgers.

The day was guided by a committed organising team, including Rodgers Vadivellu, Jessica Govender, Dennis Cullen and volunteers. Guest speakers included Selvan Naidoo of the 1860 Heritage Centre, Tholsi Mudly from the oThongathi Museum Committee and former Tongaat Section manager Gavin Ogilvie.

Organisers thanked everyone who helped make the day a memorable success.
